Based on the famous book series, Gossip Girl has made headways since its inception in 2007. This show was meant to give viewers a peek into the privileged world of teenagers of an elite private school in New York City. This story Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, along with director Mark Piznarski has done quite well to reach the fifth season, with a strong chance for a renewal for season 6 in the near future.
The fifth season of Gossip Girl was officially renewed for season five and the news came late April (April 26, 2011), with some major changes tied to it. It was announced that Taylor Momsen, (Jenny Humphrey) and Jessica Szohr (Vanessa Abrams) will no longer be regulars, whereas, Kaylee DeFer was given a regular place in the series. After the conformation of the 2011-12 schedules, Gossip Girl returned with a fifth season premiere on September 26, 2011.
Originally planned for 24 episodes, there have been ten episodes aired so far, with the 11 episode scheduled for a January 16th air date, after the regular December break. The fifth season opened in L.A. where Serena is working on a movie set, as vacationing Check and Nate decide to pay her a visit. Back in New York, Blair is shown dealing with the stress of planning a royal wedding and Dan faces the some issues due to his candid writing against a few close friends.
A surprise appearance came from Cousin Charlie, which appears to create problems for the Van der Woodsen family. At the same time, Blair seems to be determined to get Check back. It appears that the land mark 100th episode will focus on Blair’s wedding to prince Louis. In fact the producer has even claimed that it is the biggest episode of the series since the pilot. These seem to be some promising words by executive producer Joshua Safran.
Ever since the inception of this show in 2007, fans have not shied away from expressing their love for this series and its characters. Fans have even had a soft side for characters who have made questionable choices, like Blair sleeping with uncle Jack. At the same time, some people have complained that Serena has been portrayed as the perfect blonde, who gets everything working out for her, despite her bad reputation. What’s even more interesting is that she is loved by everyone against all odds and characters, who hate her, never seem to make it very long on the show. It is also worth mentioning here that the entire first episode of the first season was about her return from the boarding school.
Coming back to season five, Gossip Girl will be moving back and forth between the coasts, to make sure that viewers can keep track of Serena’s woes. While some viewers may be crossing their fingers on the hope that she may be written out, others would definitely be hoping for something different. Guess we’ll have to wait and see how things turn out for all the characters after the return of the show in 2 weeks time.
